What it is, who it's for

Stelion Lab is a research initiative into what steers collective choices:spaces, procedures, incentives, rules, data. The site had to make an abstract offer comprehensible without flattening it into a manifesto.

THE BOTTLENECK

A sound idea, unreadable

"Research and experimentation to make systems morecomprehensible" tells nobody what actually happens,or what a reader could do about it.The risk was the manifesto: handsome, agreeable, useless.A research initiative that can't explain itself risks staying an intention, not checkable work.

THE DECISION

Breaking down instead of summarising

The decision was to refuse the summary in favour of the breakdown:instead of one striking sentence, five named domains,a three-step numbered method, three defined research territories.Every abstract claim had to become a finite list, because a list can be checked and a striking sentence can't.

HOW IT'S BUILT

Five domains, three steps, six commitments

The site breaks the abstract into numbered, finite structures:five domains of enquiry, a three-step method, three research territories and a six-point responsibility protocol.Every block is countable, and therefore checkable — and every page points to the others without ever asking for a leap of faith.

HOW IT HOLDS UP

Declaring the state instead of inflating it

The Lab is in preparation and the site says so,in the label at the top and in the diary that is still empty.A declared state costs less than a simulated one: when the diary fills up, there will be nothing to walk back.

What's possible today

In a few minutes, a visitor can understand what the Lab investigates,by what method, and under which responsibility commitments —and decide whether it's worth writing, without a phone call to work out what it's about.
